You’re on a sacred journey, you’re an explorer, to discover the unique history of your ancestry. This can be a long road, it can take months, years, or lifetimes.

Ancestry work can be an emotional rollercoaster. It’s not for the faint hearted. I admit I experienced shame, sadness, disappointment and disgust at times. I also felt proud, strong, whole and supported. In the end the good outweighed the bad and I am forever changed.

You may find yourself immediately attracted to a family line or individual person, follow this intuitive feeling. I have experienced this personally and have found this is common with others I’ve worked with as well. I believe these are your ancestors guides, who will lead and protect you through this work.

Allow yourself to be guided through this. If and when you come to a dead end, it’s okay, move on, it will reveal itself when the time is right, or it won’t and what is not uncovered, trust that it’s not to be.

Journey through time

You wouldn’t believe what our ancestors had to overcome for us to be here today. They did so much with little resources, it’s amazing to connect to this, you will truly find gratitude and a new appreciation for many things that we often take for granted here today.

You may also learn that the history we’ve been told, is sometimes just “his” story. This discovery in my own journey was shocking and disappointing. We have been taught one-sided accounts of the past. There are many stories untold, undiscovered, waiting to be uncovered and told.

This is your story

  • Create a timeline, dates, events, places. Create your own version of the history discovered. Rename it and make it yours! Make it strong, example: turning a weak moment in time into a great triumph of overcoming, the growth and evolution of the power of love that won over hate, wisdom that came from ignorance, the strength that came from moving mountains….

  • Google search, I’ve been successful several times finding information that wasn’t in the Ancestry online databases, this can be helpful if you run into a difficult time finding anything in a particular ancestor.

  • Create a time capsule, don’t bury it though unless you leave a map for your decendants. Include photos, a copy of your family tree and such items of importance from your generation. Newspapers, receipts, a letter to the future for example. Something fun to do!

  • Emerge yourself in their history, the time period, the location, religion, traditions and culture.

  • Visit the land (if possible), the city, the state, or country!

  • I’ve heard once to make an offering, to a significant place or the land, by visiting a place that you feel connected to tour ancestor and leaving something for them, this could be a stone, coin, a letter, herb whatever you connect with to do so.

journey on….
